The single disc CD player won't sound any different (other than it can play CDs obviously). Tape player wasn't an option, so someone has obviously put one in from another car. The E46 CD head units come up quite often on eBay for £100-£150. You can get various iPod connectors for either type of headunit.

The audio system in the CSL is pretty compromised, just something you have to put up with unless you want to hack around with aftermarket speakers etc.

To set the clock, you twist the right hand little knob on the instrument binnacle.

Just google for e46 radio removal and you'll find some guides. It's not hard, but you have to be careful getting the dashboard trim off.

It's a 5 min job to remove the radio, very easy to do

I'll be doing mine on sunday to fit the bluetooth kit Mark sold me, I can take you some pics if you want? failing that, there are loads of DIY guides on the interweb if you want to do it before.

I think BMW changed their Business head units after 2003/4 so if you buy one with the flat pins on the connector you'll need a harness adaptor to change it back to the round pins in the CSL, but i'm not 100% sure on that one.

Yep post '05 (?) ones play mp3 cd's as above. I have had a few sets through my hands recently and the 2002, 2003 and Dec 2006 units all had the same pin connection round the back. I might be wrong but I think it was the VERY early ones that had the other pin fitting.

Here is a good little youtube vid on how to remove the cd player, it really is a 5 min job
