Default Engine question

I've got my CSL in at BMW at the moment having engine work done. It had an inspection 2 about 4-5k miles ago, i've just been to the ring and spa (both amazing ) but the engine started to rattle a bit on the way back so i booked it in with BMW thinking it was the tappits needing readjusting it turns out it has worn camshafts and rockers as well. Its done 56k miles never been used on track until I used it and always serviced at BMW.

Would you have expected BMW to have spotted the wear on the cams etc when readjusting the tappits at the inspection 2 service? and is this a common problem?

I have never heard of anyone having these problems and a lot of CSLs have a lot more miles on them than yours.I think i may get a second opinion from another Dealer, unless there going to do it all under warranty.

Quite a few higher miles ones with no similar issues, seems strange thing to wear under 100k miles

I wish i did have warranty but still waiting for the rocker arms to come in from BMW germany who won't have any stock until Friday.
Do BMW normally have no stock of these parts?

Hi,

I would be asking for the return of Both
Camshafts and the foillowers without
fail.

You will be able to see the wear on worn
Camshafts and fingers.

One thing that might have caused this
is low Oil Pressure at some point or
the Use of the wrong oil.

S54 can be prone to excessive top end wear if it
does not obtain enough of the correct oil.

Regards,

The Gorilla.

I'm guessing there is an oil starvation issue

It has always been serviced at BMW so i assume it has always had the correct oil in it although I can never be sure of this. BMW are telling me that the wear rate has been increase by the previous owner putting some sound deadening on the underside of the bonnet (why you'd want to hear less of that noise is beyond me!) which has increased the temperature at the top of the engine.

I don't know how long this sound deadening has been fitted but it was only 5k miles since it had the inspection 2 and i would have expected them to have noticed any wear at that point. It can't have worn to that extent in that time?
My only other thought is that it has been run with low oil at some point in the past, but again find this out is almost impossible.

Sounds like BMW fobbing you off, as your car is under 60k miles and has been serviced to schedule I would ask the dealer (Or another more helpful dealer) to approach BMW for goodwill. It is premature wear after all

Oh and get the sound deadening removed...
