1st Weekend in the CSL....

Well chaps, as most of you know I picked up my CSL on Friday. After a 5 hour train journey and 4 changes I arrived at Simpson Motorsport, my tyres had turned up late but just in time for Ant and Julian to get them fitted and pop them on the car.

Drove back setting off around 4pm so right through rush hour so I poodled along, and by the time I got home I had done 150 miles and was staggered to see this on the trip:



At first I thought something must be wrong as I'd never done that in my M3, but it had also only just used over quarter of a tank?!

Anyway, that's not what this car's about, but always nice to know it's good on a run! So I spent the saturday cleaning the beast and I have to say the bodywork is stunning. Apart from a tiny mark on the front bumper, there's literally not a scratch or chip or dent on the whole car

Anyway, done a few miles over the weekend down some of my favorite local roads and the drive grip and sheer noise of this beast is just increadable Obviously most of you already know this!

Fav response of the weekend though has to be from my girlfriend though after we went down a nice b-road on the way to the pub with the sport button on - "I don't know wether to laugh or cry, it's just terrifying"

BUT... only downer on the whole weekend which is a bit gutting is that the clutch is just starting to slip when it's warm I havent tried to reset it yet by pulling both paddles back (assuming you can do this in the CSL) and it's not actually slipping to the point where the rev's climb and the car doesn't gain speed, but it boggs down when shifting to the point where the rev's just hold for a second or so... and this is only with using mode 4 as that's what mode I used to drive my M3 all the time in.

So it's an absolute pain in the nuts now because I've got to get the car back to Simpson's and get a new clutch fitted before the ring and I've got no holiday left really as I'm starting a new job soon.

I really really hope this is not going to be a problem car, as I love it to bit's and just want to enjoy driving it now...

Excellent stuff and a good looking high miler That 35 MPG is quite impressive but it won't last for long mate I hope you get your clutch sorted one way or another. May be worth having a Clutch re teach first (not the same as re set) done via diagnostics before ripping it all out. Mine had it done @ Murketts and it cleared the slight slur it had, for good
BTW what is that blue thing hiding in the garage something for the weekend ?

35mpg you certain there is csl engine under the bonnet. The last time I was Badly stuck in traffic I had clutch slip afterwards. Give it some stick & hopefully it will clear itself.

Don't worry it's already back in the 20's - almost where it belongs - in the teens Was just quite impressed that's all

And as for the mince mobile in the garage - that's my Dad's Z3M I popped round his to wash the CSL as I've still got no drive at mine so all the cleaning stuff is there

Yes defo a CSL engine there - it's gone through double the fuel in half the miles of that trip by driving it at the weekend on the b roads

This wasn't after traffic - it was only when warm from giving it a good stretch

Nice one James - car looks good

The CSL can return regular >30mpg when on steady runs - when you can resist putting your right foot down!

Maybe it's just the photos but she seems to sit a little low at the front? I dunno.

Now all you need to do is sort out some BMW centre caps and get some wheel spacers on it!

Well spotted there Rob... I was wondering about that too. IMHO it looks too low all round and the wheels look well and truly tucked In, like they're shivering Spacers needed for sure

35mpg ha! High 38's are very good but really hard to keep over 39mpg without some luck.

Clutch, personally I wouldn't worry too much. May be it's trying to send you a message ie give me some track action! On at least two occasions I've thought clutch was starting to slip but sorted itself out over 150 - 200 miles without any interference.

Might just be the photo's ?

And don't worry - centre caps are on order as that's all Simpson's had.
What do most people run in the way of spacers? 12mm? all round?

Haha they are a little bit tucked yes - spacer solutions needed what ones as above?

Jesus - 39mpg! to be honest I wasn't really trying to go all out economy driving as I couldn't resist on the few twisty bits I went on but I'm not sure i'll ever bother trying to better 35

As for the clutch - Im not sure this will sort itself out and to be honest I haven't got the time testing it as I'm off to the ring next month and can't have it failing over there as it would ruin the whole trip and cost me alot more to sort if it slips too much and willies the flywheel

First off, take it out, do the paddle re-set and then give it a good old ragging in S5 or S6, flat shifting and it'll probably sort itself out. All that motorway mileage has made the self teach lazy. Mine will do it if I drive it like Miss Daisy. A proper drive sorts it out.

Thanks for that Alex, I'm sure it's had at least one clutch at around 60-70k as there is a notice on an Inspection 2 invoice saying that the SMG was reset but if adaptations get worse then fit new clutch for £1055 inc vat. So I can only assume it hasn't managed another 40k miles on that same clutch and he had it replaced shortly after...

I'll have a go at the SMG reset and try some S5/6 driving, and I always flat shift anyway when giving it a proper drive - I'm assuming thats what everyone does?
