Default Had the CSL remapped

So, I had my CSL remapped a few weeks back. I haven't modified a car since I was 20 years old and I'm one of these people who has never seen value in it. Also, the CSL is a bloody good car out of the box. So when it was discussed that my car be developed/tested for a remap, I went into it with no expectations and a fair bit of scepticism

Firstly my car dynoed standard at 369.8bhp which I was surprised by. Apparently at the same time a std E46 M3 dynoed at 338bhp so clearly my car is a good one. I was really happy with that as I always felt it was pretty strong. On the flip side maybe the remap would be pretty useless then as the car was already producing really good power? Then, a couple of days later under different conditions the car dynoed at 362bhp.

So as the week went along I was getting more and more intrigued as I was kept up to date with all the things being looked at. Most of it made no sense to me as I'm not a particularly technical person but I did my best to understand what was being explained to me.

So, the car turns up yesterday. I have driven it 60 miles in varying conditions but in mostly crap weather. Here is what I have noticed:

1) The car is faster. It's not "WOW this is much faster" but it is quicker for sure.

2) The changes are very discrete. You would have to know the car to know the changes.

3) Power is definitely more linear. It builds consistently through the rev range all the way to red line.

4) I always felt the CSL had some flat spots, maybe a better description would be, sometimes I'm thinking, come on get on with it low down the rev range as I knew above 4500rpm onwards was where the action was. Now, it feels like a solid, gradual build up of power with a crescendo as you get towards the red line.

5) Really liking the sport button memory. With sport button on, the car feels less razor sharp but not as jerky as before.

6) I think the car has more of a bark about it whether it be partial load or full load.

7) Under partial load the car feels sweeter to drive. More enjoyable to rev and more push in the back. Could just be me wanting to believe that but that's what I have sensed so far.

The CSL as std felt a little flat at times before the power came in higher up the rev range, that doesn't seem to be the case anymore, it feels more progressive.

I haven't had a chance to drive the car much due to weather conditions but as I do I will post anything more I notice with the car. I don't even know/care what the actual power output is now but it certainly feels different in a positive way. Weather is a bit crap at the moment and its hard to really test it 100% as I live in London and lots of cops and traffic around so only getting a few opportunities to really open it up.

Has anyone else remapped the CSL and what have their experiences been?

Seems like a good map Anis

SIMTIS did mine a couple of years ago and it was better but propbably used higher revs which can shorten life of motor

Simpsosn have an ESS map on mine at the moment but tbh not sure if i can tell any longer if better or not. Dyno numbers on mine nothing special, last time i think it was back at 355 bhp although i know this time last year it was 368bhp

Stick up you dyno charts Anis, I might pop over to Sal at Evolve who i believe did yours when and if i get the cams done

The thornmeister did mine ( http://www.thorneymotorsport.co.uk/t...M3_Power.shtml ) .. S2 with SS Cats and race BB... not sure the BHP as was never dyno'd but runs like a dream since it was done last year, and seems to pull a little better than the others (Rob's) and the few around me.

Not enough to get more than half a cars length, but smoother I would say overall.

Depends what your trying to achieve I suppose TBH Brakes / Tyres / Suspension in that order will make the most difference with driver ability / training included

To give you an example :
Std RS Focus (engine wise ) running on KW clubsports with half cage and brake upgrade ...

My personal approach is to stay away from a remap in the CSL (when it's stock like mine).

That is the options... the car I saw and spoke to them about.. the one in the link is running std

Mine came with a Thorney's map on it, otherwise the engine / exhaust is completely standard. The main aim for mine by the previous owner was the removal of the limiter and to sort the fuelling at low revs.

I can't compare what it was like as std, but yep mine seems razor sharp with the sport button on, linear-ish but pulls harder as the revs rise (in a linear way). I don't have any flat spots...


Agreed that dyno printouts mean little unless it is one car and done 'before' and 'after' some work on the same day / dyno etc.

It was 369.8 on a specific day. It was then 362bhp 2 days later. I believe it is 370bhp after map. I don't understand all this dyno stuff to be honest. All I have realised that dynoing at 369.8 on 1 day doesn't mean it will regularly turn that out. Same with the remap, might churn out 370 one day, 380 the next (unlikely) or 365. I'll post the before and after dyno map later on.

When the air is cold,it is much denser than hot air. This raises the compression ratio which in turn produces a more complete combustion cycle and lowers the engines fuel demands. Also,the atoms in cold gasoline are more aligned and mix with the air more thouroughly resulting in better combustion.You’ve probably noticed you car having more power in the winter too.
