So at the 'Ring, I just left the SMG in S4. Never had any issues with finding the change too slow.

Then before leaving, I stopped through Black Falcon who run CSLs in the VLN race series. I asked them about the SMG, and their Chief Tech says that they NEVER run the race cars in anything faster than S3 !

He says they have datalogged the cars in all the different SMG modes, and he says it makes absolutely no difference except for the psychological effect of the 'slam in the back', and the need to rebuild the gearbox and driveshafts when in anything higher than S3.

So as an experiment, I decided to run the car in S2 on the way home, and true enough I found that I was making progress no slower, and the car seemed even happier in the slower S-mode. In fact, it was so much better, I think I'll probably just leave it in S2 from now on.

There's no doubt that I wince each time I feel an S5/6 gearchange, so perhaps there is truth to what Black Falcon say?

I think if you do this over time with the standard clutch you might start to experience the slippage on change in only s2 when driving hard, say around the ring. I was in s4 around the ring and after around 3 laps in a row I started to get slipped changes. I bumped it up to s5 and it came back and was ok after that.

I think one of the other questions to ask them would have been whether they use standard clutch plates / material, standard clamping force pressure plates and standard flywheels otherwise the comparison isn't valid.

I agree on the road under normal driving s2 etc works fine and won't cause any issues, but under sustained hard driving it seems to not work well.

I never change mine...it's always in S5....It certainly seems more agressive on track. Does it make for quicker progress....god knows.

Under wide throttle and high revs I don't think it does make much difference. If you've used SMG for a while you know it varies it's shift speeds depending on throttle position and engine speed rather than just drivelogic mode.
