CSL Top Speed - Restricted or Derestricted
My CSL speedo has gone up to around 170mph - although it, is as far as I know, restricted.
I bought it in June 2004 and the previous "owner" was the dealer principal at the BMW garage so I don't think he would have had a race licence to have it derestricted. What's that all about then? Why say its restricted and then it doesn't seem to be? Anyone not been able to get past say 160mph on a restricted one? Who has actually had theirs derestricted? |

Ive seen just shy of 70 and no sign of limiter, but Id imagine it is.
Obviously there is speedo error and it could be as much as 15mph at that speed, but Id have thought it'd be limited to what the speedo says? Can the car tell its GPS / actual speed even though the speedo reads different? |

I have never used GPS so can't answer that one. Be interesting to know though. |

I know most of them go way past 155 on the speedo but with GPS i think its spot on. Not hit the limiter yet tho!

I get 174mph then the car just wont go any faster it is limited and the gps reads 164mph 10% out like they all are.
I also had i derestricted and i had it at 184mph and i thought thats fast enought I am geting my car delimited for £400 thats a rolling road then the ecu remaped to the rolling road fig. Then rolling road again to see the gains the top speed limiter is removed when they do it. There is 2 eproms need changing in the ecu, Bmw will do it for 500euros and you need a racing licence to get it done and the ecu needs to go back to Msport Germany takes 2 weeks. |

Limiters usually come in a closer to 160mph. Speedo's are typically 5-7% out (over reading). On a trip in Germany on de-restricted autobahn, mine hit the limiter at an indicated 172mph, GPS showing 162mph.
Mine is now delimited and on my last trip I saw 176mph GPS. Speedo was off the clock. I expect 180mph would have been about all she had that day with the space available but it was 34 degree ambient temps, not ideal for optimum power. Quite enough for me and that'll prpbably be the last time I go for a top speed run. Not really the point of the car.

Agree with Mark, on my old e46 M3, it would do exactly 170 (GPS indicated 163) on the the A2 Autobahn when I lived in Germany. The engine note changed slightly and it would not go faster (held it for 10-12 seconds, numerous times). Clearly the CSL's areodynamics are slightly different and has slightly more power, but I use it as an example of how the BM limiter doesn't kick in on an indicated 155 as you would expect.

I read somewhere recently that the restricted top speed is 163mph not the 155mph commonly thought. This corresponds with the observations here.
I would expect to see 180mph indicated for a genuine 163mph. Mine is derestricted via a remap and I've only seen 170 indicated in the UK but that's coz I wimped out rather than an issue with the car. James. |
