Default First driving experience

Having picked up the car last Monday, this weekend was my first opportunity for a real drive. When I came home on Monday the roads were cold and wet and the car was on cup tyres, so it wasn't the best driving experience, I just took it very easy. I did notice how badly the car tramlined on main roads, which wasn't all that pleasant. During the week I put on a different set of original CSL wheels with new Michelin pilot super sport tyres, changed the oil and filter and fitted a tracker to the car in the hope of getting it back more easily if the worst happens. A friend from the lake district came down on Thursday night so that we could go out driving on Friday and Saturday. Most of the time we drove a car each, I did around 200 miles in 996 turbo, 150 miles in the CSL and 90 in the NSX. Pootling around feels a bit clumsy in the CSL, this is my first time using an SMG gearbox and I am working on lifting slightly on upshifts to make them smoother. Any awkwardness when plodding around towns goes away on the open country roads. The suspension seems firm but not hard, and with the change of tyres the tramlining has gone. At first I thought having the paddles move with the wheel seemed like a bad idea, but once out of town it is apparent that with the faster rack my handles don't move on the wheel, so they are always in the right place The blip on downchange sounds fantastic and the noise during hard acceleration is also wonderful. On the last part of the drive on Saturday I put it in to sport mode and had a whole lot of fun, the throttle response is just amazing. I can see what all the fuss is about now.
It is nowhere near as fast as the 911, but responds massively faster to throttle inputs, the ride isn't as supple as the NSX and it is a generally rawer experience. So all-in-all, a fun weekend

dont lift when changing gear ... as many will tell you , it induces clutch slur.

I came from a modded 996 turbo & I've now put 7000 miles onto my CSL over the 2 years .. as you say, not as quick as a Turbo, but IMHO way more fun. It took me quite a while to bond with the CSL and the SMG ( all my Porkers are manuals ) , but give it time & it really gets under your skin. Iv'e decided the only way to drive a CSL is just to drive it hard

( I live in Yorkshire so smoothness in traffic isn't a requirement )

Do not lift, keep in S5 and cups will feel heavy till you get heat into them, on a dry day they will get heat into them fine, on a cold wet day be careful as they can punish you.

In the summer the car will come alive in them.

Have fun.
