'Intelligent' iDrive refers to the in-car computer system which controls and monitors, all the electrical systems of the car!
The i3 and i8 by their designation would suggest that the computer interface has evolved and is now controlling all aspects of the car and quite possibly relaying all this data to BMW, as it goes about it's journey. This sort of tech could very well make speed cameras a thing of the past!
