The immobilizer doesn't need a battery to work.
The alarm just makes some sound if you move the car etc.
Anyhow, not having the battery connected would definitely confuse the thief.

I don't know what are the regulations in UK, but from the countries that I know (CH, GR, UAE) there is no such thing like 'the alarm didn't sound, we are not paying for the car'. My car doesn't have an alarm and no insurance in CH is asking to HAVE an alarm to pay you in case it gets stolen in CH or out of CH.

Surely you could set the alarm and then disconnect the battery which I am sure could be done with the aid of some wires into the boot then you would be covered. It is unlikely the thieves will not reconnect a battery to get her started (ie. flat load her) at which point the alarm will go off.

Either way I am sure you would be covered.
