January vat at 20%

Does anyone know if vat is payable on purchases of second-hand cars from private dealers or is it only on new cars?

vat is payable by companies on second hand cars that have not gone to private individuals (ie demomstators, pool cars etc) but this normally means they reflect second hand prices but vat is paid back by seller and it doesnt affect the purchaser unless they are a company and then the car can be laid off against vat

Thank you Shimmy and Lawsy. Just deciding whether I should buy a second hand GT3 I have had my eye on in December or leave it a little longer. Not that I will be able to drive it down from up north anyway at the moment.
