Default Vanos Solenoid??

Can someone explain to me what it does and where it is?

Here you go mate.
Part is the rectangular bit in this diagram below the vanos, the gasket above it is the solenoid gasket.

It's what controls the oil pressure in order to alter the cam timing.

Common failure on the e46 vanos.

Hi,

Shimmy- do you have issues or codes ?

Always check the plate with seals [no. 7] on the
diagram, as if the seals are leaking oil then
the Vanos can be down on oil pressure.

The 'seals' were a common fault on the S50 B32
E36 M3 engine, although it was a slightly different
design.

Other item to check is the Vanos Oil Filtre.
