Default E46 M3 question

Hi guys.

A mate of mine's missus has recently got an E46 m3, and he sent me this message:

Its making a funny noise when you switch the car off, like a rattle underneath, very similar to the kind of noise you get if you nearly stall the car but then suddenly catch the clutch in time. If you have the clutch pressed down when switching off it doesnt make the noise. Im sure i remember soming about this to do with the clutch release bearing? She's popped it back to the garage and they have told her its a common problem and not to worry about it, the other 2 m3's they had in also did it. It's, 51 plate with 78k miles and full bmw history. Thanks very much. If your on the spot with it in gear and pull the clutch up and down quite quickly so it drives forward slowly albeit jerky, it makes the same kind of rattle from around the middle of the car underneath. Difficult to describe but hope that makes sense.

Any of you guys who have had m3's previously got any thoughts on this?

Thanks in advance

Normal, don't worry about it. I spoke a couple indies about it.

Dip the clutch while turning it off, problem solved

I must admit it's not something my old one did mate, mine was a '53 plate Manual with about 60k on the clock IIRC..

Cheers for posting this up Dan. Thought i would register anyway as im sure she will need some future advice.

Thanks for your comments so far, does seem a bit odd to me, i cant believe they came from the factory like that and would rather prove that its ok from other peoples experience than just accepting it from the garage it was purchased from.

Any further info much appreciated.

Your may not have had the rattle, but I know a couple that do exactly that when you turn them off. When I asked at my indy he knew about it straight away and said it is pretty normal.

If you want it gone you can get the gearbox replaced.

Mine does it too if I dont hold the clutch in when turning it off.

As the others have said pretty normal, its all over the M3 forums, and Im not sure the gearbox is the fix.
