Quick tyre question
After a bit of advice please.
Looking for a set of cups, was going for cup2 as said elsewhere but have been advised off them. Found some cups on the internet however, it says DOT2011. Does that mean the manufacture date is 2011? If so, are they too old? Ta |

2011 is getting past it a bit but entirely dependent on how they've been stored. At work we wouldn't test on something that old, but when I bought my car it came with some 11 year old cups which although perished still felt very positive and grippy laterally despite being a little slippery on acceleration.
They'll probably be fine, probably 95%+ as good as a new set. If they're even slightly marked or worse perished, send them straight back. They've probably been in a dark warehouse for 5 years and it's UV that kills them more than anything else.

Thanks for that mate.
What made me suspicious is that they are reduced by 50%. Think I'll give them a miss. |

Yes, it usually says CW/YYYY as in, calender week and year of production.
So if yours says xx/2011, then its manufactured in 2011. I wouldn't say that they are too old, it depends on how they have been stored. I would ask for a discount and go from there. Edit: Oops too late

They're on the TyreLeader site so, I can't see storage being unsuitable but, can't be 100% certain on it. Knowing myself, if I had the tiniest doubt on them I wouldn't stick them on the car, and that doubt is currently there! |

I would say they'd be fine, particularly for a track spanking. I did email them last year asking how these older ones had been stored and they couldn't tell me.
A friend of a friend of a Michelin engineer says the best Cup 2 setup is Porsche Spec front tyres and generic spec rears for the CSL, I'm not sure if that's the setup the guys used on here?

They'd spend 99% of the time on the road with the odd track day chucked in.
Can't say I'd have 100% confidence in them so, in my mind, that says leave them. Bit of a ballache but so be it. The main reason for wanting them is that they were the original kit but with the car being 13 yrs old it's a given that tyre technonolgy moves on. Could be worse, I could have missed out on the car with the way prices have been going! The price of them is heading beyond what I could reasonably afford. Not all bad then Last edited by pops; 15-02-2016 at 01:54 PM. |

Has Gareth not contacted you? He has been trying the number you gave me, but just goes to answer service?
He said he was going to message you on Friday if he couldn't get through?

Brian
had a couple of sets from tyreleader @ DOT 2011/12 been absolutely fine A cup that is at 90% of its optimum performance is 40% more than I need Cups can be brutally treated on track. Speaking only for myself I am a long way from extracting 100% from cups. |
