Default Auto Mode

I don't know if this is operator error or the car... i read the SMG manual and it says just move the gearlever so it shows 'A.' Now, sometimes if i do this from a standstill it will change from 1st -> 2nd by itself, but from then on it doesn't do anything...

Should i be doing something else or is something amiss? I remember reading about pulling both paddles for something once and tried that, but it didn't do anything

Once its in Auto mode, you don't need to do anything else, it changes gears up and down just like a standard auto.

As soon as you touch either paddle, or move the leaver, this will instantly take it back into manual mode though.

I would imagine that when you have the gear change in the slowest speed, that the only resaon why you would do that was because of slippery road conditions (a slower gear change would decrease the chance of jolting the transmission = less chance of breaking traction) - in which case you would want to set off in 2nd rather than 1st

Yes, S1 is for snow and similar conditions...

I thought maybe it was my interferring, but i've put the car in 'S', then back to 'A' but it still doesn't change gear...

If you do that then it's not in Auto Mode - it's in Seq Mode. In Auto Mode it displays 'S'.
It isn't telling you what mode you're in, it's telling you what mode you can select.

What does 'S' stand for? I thought it stood for Sporty!

So in that case putting in 'S' should be automatic mode? Even so, still think there is something up as when i switch from neutrol to drive its always going from S to A many times in a journey and yet - as described - only changes up one gear (1st to 2nd)

So automatic mode isnt working, is that what you mean?

ie. it will go 1st to 2nd, but wont go 2nd to 3rd, 3rd to 4th, 4th to 5th etc. (as an auto gear should do all by itself?)
