Nope - was too expensive with too many classes.

Something for people to think about though - I was chatting with a guy I know through racing that he was thinking about running a race series for the E46 M3. Ethos is to make it fair and affordable. A one make series, no csl allowed, standard engine, gearbox, diff (apart from cooling), standard suspension top mounts (basically means that you can be competitive with a £2000 suspension system and if you spend £5000 on suspension it will be no real benefit), exhaust manifold must be standard, the remainder is allowed to be modified. ecu will be locked out with a specified map supplied by the race organiser and then sealed. 18 inch wheels only, you can use the same width front and back to extend tyre life by interchanging front with rears - saves money again. The one thing that needs to be tested is brakes, big brakes will be pricey. If, and it is a big if that I asked about - if the brakes can be proved to work with braided hoses, standard calipers with uprated fluid and race pads, then it should be a very cost effective way to race a fantastic car. In short, you can buy a car now for £5000, yes, it may be a cat d or an old tatty one, but who cares it's going to be raced. Another £5000 should make it race ready, so you get to the grid for £10,000 in a 343 bhp, rear wheel drive, one make series where everyone effectively has the same car.

Obviously these are rough figures, but achievable - seems like a bargain to me, I'm in if it goes ahead!!

Anyone else fancy it?

If that had been around 3 years ago then yeah, sounds awesome, too far down another route now though.

I think the idea was always a good one but Thorneys hunt for selling a/m stuff and the recession got in the way.

I think you could run it on the TrAckday Trophy/Team Trophy series to start with MSV. Allow more mods than suggested such as suspension, brakes, no aero, as any serious driver will want the car to handle better and tyres to wear slowly (maybe control tyres to take re budget and heavy exlenditure out). 40 minute races and take away the sprint, two drivers to remove some of the damage and testosterone (keeping costs down)

In this climate you'd be lucky to get 10-12 cars of this type but if by chance it looked like good racing it may take off. Other series don't like E46M3 as they are too quick.

Control tyre would definately be there and 40 min 2 driver races were an option aswell as sprints and endurance races. One of the main reasons for a one make series is exactly what you pointed out Shim, other race series don't like the E46 M3 as it is too quick, such a shame since it is a cracking car that is becoming quite affordable now. Disagree about allowing more mods though, cost spiral and the man with the deepest pockets wins. I'll happily race wheel barrows........as long we all have the same wheel barrow. If drivers want to modify as they go on, this not for them.

Suspension will have to be aftermarket. 90% of M3 now are 60k miles plus and the OeM suspension will be fucked. The last thing you want to do is buy new OeM suspension if you go racing, and next last thing is race or OeM suspension fucked or not as the tyres won't last esp in 40 minute races.

Tbh everybody who races would want suspension and brakes upgraded along with decent tyres. This would also mean that CSL/M3 could both run as only difference worth talking about would be a CF roof.

I'm just going in the garage to start building I've always wanted to enter my CSL in the TrAckday Trophy
Nice idea to have mix of 40 and 20 minute races.

yeah pretty much agree with the ninja pity thorney cocked it up the first time around myself I think you can keep things pretty simple it doesnt have to be too expensive, first of all you can use a road legal trackday tyre like the yoko ad08 which comes with 8mm of tread depth so it can be used in the dry and the wet and is approx 2 seconds a lap slower than a cup but will last 2-3times longer. So which would appeal to the road/trackday guys who dont want to buy an extra set of wheels, keep the car on standard wheels (get a set on ebay for £100) as regards suspension you need top mounts KW and Billstein do a none ajustable set for approx £1000, only upgrade the front brakes KSport do a set for approx£1000. Standard rear brakes are okay with upgraded pads, usual thing like bushes upgraded, weights 1400 kgs fuelled up and if you want to run adjustable front suspension and ap's front and rear the car has to weigh 1450 kgs, so here you go things can be run on a budget all the above is really to get guys who are doing trackdays and still race in a road legal car, two races a day both 30mins one or two drivers to keep the cost down

Here a list of entrants
