Default Which 997

My father is looking to get in a 997 Turbo, ideally one with low depreciation. Options as follows:

Gen 1 manual - rare, lowest depreciation, but for a man in his 60s is the manual too much hard work to use daily?

Gen 1 tip - less rare, cheaper, will probably lose more money. Is the gearbox dreadful?

Gen 2 PDK - more expensive, no Metzler engine, awesome box, highest depreciation I would guess

We have heard feedback that the manual doesn't suit a turbo. What are your thoughts?

Gen 1 Tip box is very poor compared to PDK - only buy a Gen 1 Tip if you've got budget constraints

Gen 2 PDK cars have already suffered a large chunk of depreciation so may not be the depreciation pit you anticipate

Gen 1 manual would be my choice of the 3 cars you've listed

Get a GTS with PDK, probably the best all round porsche ever made, and they will continue to hold their value as well as any of them.

i think it was a much better car than the turbo PDK i drove and real world road performance is probably not that much difference

63 year old man who will keep for probably 3 years doing max of 20,000 miles. No track days. Will be used sympathetically.

Goal is to minimise deprecation.

I'm not sure if over revs is actually a real issue as it's only a concern if you plan on putting a Porsche warranty on a car, under 10 years old, which does not already have a Porsche warranty.

The test could also tell you if the car has been held at very high revs for a long period of time which would be useful, however, we do not require this information from any other cars (all of which could produce it) which suggests this is one of those things given life by the internet.

When having my last service at Porsche Leicester this subject came up sort of by accident. I went onto ask them about it and the chap their quietly described it as a non issue.

As to the question; a manual Mezger engined turbo would appear a safe bet based upon what's happening in today's market.

I have heard great things about the GTS. I would test drive a GTS and a 997.1 manual turbo then decide.
