There is probable a good reason why BMW didn't produce the rocker cover as per the prototype, more fixings than cost implications, does CF become brittle when subjected to heat? Is it oil resistant?
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-e46-M3...item4d1701e9f4 an example of the potential fixings issue - overtightened at a service? However there are plenty of manufacturers currently offering S54 engine/rocker covers eg. German based CF specialists: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Engine-Cov...item3cd6baaa68 and closer to home CA Technologies: http://www.ca-int.co.uk/products-Y2FyX21ha2U9Ym13JmNhcl90eXBlPWU0Nm0mY2F0X2lkPTQ0.h tml

What do you mean with oil resistant Neil ?
Also, the 320si features a full CF rocker cover (what is normally plastic on normal BMW engines or aluminium in the S54 engine). The reason why they didn't put one is down to cost. In the case of the 320si, they wanted to homologate it for the racing engine, so cost was not a problem. Here the one from the Mclaren F1 GTR Longtail engine. Carbon engine covers, carbon coil packs etc. The problem with the already offered carbon rocker covers is that quality is bad and the weight savings are minimal. The one I want to make should be less than 400g, otherwise it's pointless to replace the original one (that's my personal opinion of course). |

How much oil do you think it comes in to contact with anyway Neil?
Saving 600 grams on a lardy road car is pointless anyway. If you want to save weight just take the original one off for trackdays but anyone claiming they can notice the difference of just that saving is on such a heavy engine is deluded.

Carbon's Epoxy Resin has to be cured to the temperature it will reach in use otherwise the resin will return to its previous form ! messy, also it will change colour over time hence you see lots of Carbon engine components going a goldish colour. |

I personally never saw the point of putting carbon bits without a weight saving. So for me personally reducing the weight of this component and making it nicer is something I like. I dont follow the deluded comment that you made Edit: deluded are people claiming 420bhp on tuned non BMW MS S54 engines |

If you want deluded power figures someone showed me a graph of an s54 with cams and vanos delete claiming 473bhp at the crank
I don't see the point in just covering stuff with carbon either, but equally I don't see the point in making your engine bay look pretty, guess if you want to impress BMW assist it is ok Anyway, I was just commenting on the fact that 500g (not enough savings according to you) or 600g (enough) makes no difference when you have a bloody great lump of pig iron underneath it.

Driving a 130bhp car on drugs would feel like 473bhp. Maybe they did the power graph on an etch a sketch on a horse tranquilliser high.
