Some more on the M3 GTS

I've got a bit of a lob-on for the GTS and I'm not sure why.

Evo didn't rate it too highly compared with the 997RS, albeit Car seem to like it better.

It just looks like a double-hard bastard next to the boringly familiar 911 silhouette.

AlexGTT 27-01-2011 11:13 PM

I think next to the 997 GT3 RS it looks second rate and like it crashed through Halfords front window into the Ripspeed dept. Also makes the 997 GT3 RS look great value and it's substantially quicker on Ring.

There's no contest.

shimmy 27-01-2011 11:21 PM

Seeing it in the flesh made me realise it is pants.

Masively overpriced due to low numbers but nothing more than a homologation exercise to run the 4.4 ltr engine

Spoiler, Cf roof and interior looks rubbish for £120k

Engine bay looks sweet.

truth is you can do this yourself and better with an e92 M3 (much easier than M3 to CSL). More power and better suspension.

sure in that orange colour, but in that new frozen grey colour it would look very mean, purposeful and very sexy. it is still quite heavy for a 'lightweight' at 1530kg. i think with just a major diet to csl weight it would compete with gt3rs around the ring, but for that price it should already be lighter.

i think they are only made in orange

I wouldn't care what paint was on it. It's still shite in comparison. It's also way too heavy at 1530kg. I've seen nicer rear wings on the Saxo's racing round the town centre.

Also, as me, Shimmy, Yanto and Daz saw, they use the same carbon roof as the regular coupe and badly fill the fixing for the sharks fin. Very second rate and not bespoke enough for the price.

yeah they are, for some strange reason. horrible colour. so pikey

if i got one i think the first thing i would do is spray it frozen grey.

my mate got a e92 competition pack in frozen grey with all the csl carbon bits, it looks seriously sexy like an e92 csl! i'll get a pic up of both of ours side by side soon.

apparently the wing is the from bmw 320 race cars.

i agree about the price. bmw should have produced more, lowered the price (£70k) and called it the e92 csl. i would have been all over it like flies on hot s**t.

No thanks. A bit OTT for me. I'd have the performance up-grades but go stealthy on the looks.;)

i think when you are pushing 600bhp you need a wider track to get the power down, so its kinda part and parcel of the performance upgrades.

and i dont think bright orange on the gts is less stealthy than this monster.

whether or not i would want one is an entirely different matter.

I didn't mean converting a GTS. I was thinking a bogo coupe.

gts or bog coupe , the chassis is not designed to handle that kind of power, thus to push 600bhp, modifications to the chassis must be made. they dont need to be, but for better traction in lower gears and powering out of corners it is paramount.

alexk 28-01-2011 10:23 PM

I expressed my opinion when I first saw the CSL 1.5 year ago in Munich (one of the first ones to see it).

Nah, more powerful M3s running round with standard bodies.

There is a customer M3 Coupe at Simpson Motorsport with more than 600bhp. Chassis handles the power just fine.

i wish i was part owner, i'd have a lot of toys i can only dream of.

i just saw this on their website the other day, and i thought it was a road version of the alms e92 m3. so when mattcsl said for 120k he'd rather have the alms race car it immediately sprang to mind.

gimme a break guys, bloody hell. i'm just an enthusiast.:smt100

to make the most out of the 600bhp i think you need a wide body kit. take a look at the wheel spin.

And what a scientific approach to prove that you need a wide body kit to put the power down...
A video of the tacho, -7.5 degrees temperature, god knows where the video is taken and wheelspin in first gear...

You convinced us now :blalalala:

BTW, what is the chassis number of your CSL

:hahaha: :thumbs:Agreed. Ahhhhh, bless you Shim, always looking out for the new guys. Or grooming as it's actually known.:gayfight:

Mind you, -7.5 degrees is not the ideal conditions to get any sort of power down Toofast.;)

_Nathan_ 29-01-2011 02:58 PM

Indeed, just joking.

You can fit pretty wide tyres under the normal arches though, certainly wider than BMW fit.

i think you will find that it wheel spins in the first 3 gears and is only able to put the power down in 4th. Can you count?

the video illustrates the fact that the chassis does not cope well with 600bhp.

i agree that in -7.5 it would be difficult to put the power down, but according to g power it had winter tyres and the conditions were optimal for this kind of test.

guru, no. but i watched the video and upon analysis i conveyed my thoughts about traction issues to g power when i spoke to them about their prototype exhaust. they agreed to get the most out of 600bhp, modifications to the chassis must be made.

i will be going to g power in about a month and i will drive the car then.:smokin:

my friend knows the exact details as he has a working relationship with g power. maybe g power is lying that they have just developed the prototype and that they even took the photo yesterday, but i very much doubt that as i dont see why they would lie.

my friend is a professional racing driver good enough to get sponsored to drive the not yet developed ferrari 458 gt3, he won the gt3 championship in the dbrs9, had a few seasons in the gt2 rsr and has done testing in lmp1. so when he talks about anything to do with cars it is pure fact, he doesnt speculate.

being part of this forum, one should not assume that they know more than others not on the forum or recently joined, perhaps they do but perhaps they dont. it is just narrow mindedness to assume one knows more than the next man. you said: 'you are not listening members that are here for a few years and actually know a bit more than you.' the operative word here is 'know', as they dont know, they assume it is the same exhaust as a result of a few similar recurring variables.

according to my friend who spoke to akrapovic directly, while akrapovic have not entirely ruled out the possibilty of making an exhaust for the e46 m3, they told him it is very very unlkely as the e46 is the old model now and there isn't a big enough market to produce it. they also added that they are far too busy with development for newer cars with much bigger markets to even consider producing an exhaust for the e46 m3 for the time being.

So your friend has a working relationship with G Power...
