Default Engine light followed by 80's Quattro sound

Hit the rev limiter for about a second this evening and the engine light came followed by what seemed to be a dropped cylinder. Engine note like an early Audi rally car. Turned engine off and back on again and the problem had gone away and no engine light. Drive home was fine. Is this some kind of engine protection mode or something more sinister?

Hitting rev limiter shouldn't cause any issues, that is what it is there for.

Coil packs are not uncommon, if you run it until very hot it may reappear.
