Default Pistons what to use

As it’s a new year. Hopefully an interesting topic... As with ongoing project. Was considering these in std size, on this 100k block just for the hell of it , if things measure up still in spec regarding bore , didn’t want to go oversized to much hassles ,, about a grand for six pistons with rings etc , Which isn’t much more than a set of oem rings from bmw. Anybody have experience of aftermarket pistons, ????

Anybody tried these wossner pistons, seem decent enough slightly higher compression than standard piston. But hopefully ok will std gasket etc.

I'd go for the Mahle ones - they are effectively OE quality (for good reason)

Hi mike not ruling anything out. Any information on price of mahle pistons and who stocks them. Other than bmw parts themselves. ?? I’m sort of trying to do this project “budget” , as it’s only for research/ experiment/ fun so to speak

Try speaking to Andrew Lang at:
www.langracing.com

Very good rates and even with the import duty a mate got some for his M3 for cheaper than in the UK.

The link for the pistons you want:
https://store.langracing.com/mahle-m...s-for-bmw-s54/

They do standard compression (11.5) or 12.3 if you have someone that can remap the car .

Don't be tempted into using anything else....

Hi all. Hopefully of interest to someone,, further to researching more on piston rings, and std rings,, having had the npr aftermarket ring set for some time, decided to pick up a new set of genuine bmw rings today just for comparison, in the 00 size,,,putting the rings side by side I don’t see much difference other than markings, same profiles etc ,,and I’d be happy to use the npr rings on a rebuild ,, Also I believe mahle don’t make the rings, just the pistons,, And apparently npr are the only aftermarket manufacturers to make the rings for the oem pistons I could be completely wrong of course,, There is a very slight difference in front to back measurements of the npr , npr Only Supply the one size for public purchases,,. Bmw list Three sizes for different bore sizes. I’ve got measurements if anybody interested ,, The npr rings for the six sets cost me about £170. Genuine oem 00 size £115 one set,, imo npr look a great buy especially for track car rebuild, or any std m3. Dare I say even the csl,, any feedback chaps welcome “”good or bad “”

Ok so I popped in so oem 00 piston rings into 100k block this puts the ring end gaps back to perfect as new min end gaps 0.20 top ring. 0.36 middle ring. As previously mentioned npr rings puts this 100 k motor back in the oem spec ballpark,, npr same size as 0 ring size. Choose your poison ...so if you’re doing head gasket new shells. Why not pop in some rings, lap in the valves new valve seals , may as well do new valves springs ,,jobs a gud un
