I concur

The First 1000 Were JB98xxx

The second lot Were JC98xxx (So add a 1 before the 3 digit number)

According to the info from Roland, much apreciated!

Gents

I've done a bit of research on this and my original thought had been that the last three digit chassis codes must correspond in some way to the actual build numbers (and according to a rumor I heard of someone approaching somebody in Germany about this), but unfortunately it seems what BMW did was assign the chassis code according to the "country" the cars were destined for (i.e. if 10 arrived in your Country, then BMW simply assigned JX98X01 to JX98X10 to the cars randomly (X denoting another number or letter, in CSLs either JBXXXXX or JCXXXXX - I do believe all RHD models had JC rather than JB as these were made after the full production LHD were completed).

A good illlustration of this are all the NZ new CSLs:

Mine was the first to arrive in the Country and has been given JC98237, yes another vehicle which arrived later than mine also in Silver grey had JC98234 - but all the silver grey cars were given consecutive chassis codes (i.e. from JC9823X to JC9823X).

All the Black CSLs in the country - a grand total of 2 had JC98219 and JC98220, yet one arrived in November 2003 and another in January 2004.

So I guess the best we can actually come up with is to utilise the build date rather than chassis codes.

Otherwise pretty cool idea.

Thanks Tom, I guess we'll have to have a 1000+ international register

"... have finally gotten word from BMW and it is something I didn't expect.

The fact is, BMW builds better cars than anything else. After numerous dialogs und misunderstandings within BMW I have been told that BMW will not be able to give out the build numbers.

This is because BMW cannot assign the CSL numbers to their production line.

The reason is that the CSL was taken out of the production line several times e.g. because of CF Roof, rear seat assembly and so forth. This meant the slots where always different. This meant that one CSL could have overtaken another CSL in the Production Process. Since BMW never intended to make plates for our cars they never documented the production process in full detail.

BMW admitted that to satisfy CSL owners they decided to make up a formula using VIN+1 even though they have no idea if that is correct."

As I said earlier, I cannot substantiate any of this but it does seem to explain the problem scenario pretty well!!
