I believe the thread title is "Racing Drivers". To me that's drivers of racing cars not rally cars. Besides the two disciplines are so far apart in technique that they very rarely cross.

And Jim Clark average!!! Tell me your joking??

Also, I rate drivers from an era when you had no electronic aids, a clutch and a gear stick far higher than most modern era drivers. Try controlling 400-500bhp and more with 600/650 x 19 cross ply tyres, evil power delivery and Pre-War suspension technology. Then add in very average track surfaces, no run off or safety considerations, cotton driving suits, leather flying caps and goggles at speeds in excess of 175mph. If you drove one today you'd shit yourself at 80mph........trust me.

Rally driver are on the whole better 'Drivers' - not counting Senna

Jim Clark average. I agree regarding the electronic aids etc but back in the day it wasn't as competitive to become a driver in the first place so those guys were the best of the bunch back then but most didnt work their way through karting, F'Ford, F3 etc?

These days far more focused / talented drivers

Agree with most of that but Jim Clark still had to work his way up, through hill climbing, sportscars, Formula Junior, etc. before F1. Also, show me a modern F1 driver who won World Championship F1 titles, BTCC in between and won the Indy 500 the same year as he was F1 Champion.

He was a bit special and Senna thought he was the best of the best. I'll take that.

I agree on paper Clark did well but how good were the people he was up against?
