Saurma did both times. The GTS perhaps lost out on the choice of tyre, whereas the CSL lost out due to brakes.

The two times cannot really be compared then can they unless we know hiw much time was lost to each handicap?

Honestly, the CSL for me is not about its N-lap times, albeit it was some achievement back then.

For laptimes nothing beats a Datsun or the new Porkie turbos etc. Hell even these fast hatch backs etc can do sub-8mins nowadays.

Its the purity of the driving and like Monkeys review of the M3 GTS/C63 BS/Porkie 4.0, its the seriousness of the engineering exercise. In context, back in the days, the CSL and the use of materials for the price point was WOW! Just like the 996 GT3 RS with ceramics etc.

The cars nowadays are so capable that even a sub 30K super mini can give us a run for our money, but that is not the point in collecting a fine vehicle like the CSL. Its like a piece of art in engineering terms vs the speed demons parts bin catalogue (nothing wrong with after market parts by the way).

For outright bragging for N-laptime, get a NISMO-Datsun, for super pose get a Lambo/F-car, for the silly rich you get hypercars, for premium racing you go either with Weissach, Garching, Affalterbach. For me cesil is a master piece at its price point!

^^^ Was just about to say the same!

Fine words though, I wholeheartedly agree, nothing else at the current price-point comes close

No down by 30k in the future as no matching numbers.

Just my observation from the UK market. Remember prices are determined at the margin and anyone who's selling at fire sale prices sets the market expectation.
Yes, the M3 does attract the boy racers in the uk who not necessarily can afford to maintain them & then need to offload them.

When the price of a CSL could get you a 911 turbo, I hardly think the people buying them are likely to be doing so on a shoestring. I suspect most are bought as a 2nd / 3rd car.

difference in new price 2003 between a csl & gt3 was approx €16.5k, which, is a lot more than it sounds now. Somebody will be along to tell us what that is in today's money.
