Hi,
Oh yes, E39 M5 I remember it well. I think the reason they sold so many in North America was due to the fact that there are very few roundabouts there. Just think people will que for hours on end in 100 degrees plus at Disney to be scared shitless and all they have to do is be a passanger in a E39 M5. Will it turn in ? won't it turn in ? oh the hours of fun. Even better with Servo Tronic steering, well its really an electronically controlled valve in the steering box from which BMW found on the ARK, but at least it got an 'M' stamped on it. M for maybe ? Mine must have been a NA one as it would not go around roundabouts either. Eibach ARB's, 7 hour job just for the front one, Bilstein Uprated Coilovers, AP 6 pots, Polybushed, SSK, and so on, but no, it still refused to do roundabouts. And then I discoverd 'Limp Mode' , and yes, if by magic you could do roundabouts, limp mode was great for sightseeing on those long journeys on the way back to the dealer as well. Usually CPS on exhaust number 2 Bank, but number 1 Bank would look to join the party if he was up to it. Almost forgot 'Clutch Slur'' well 'slip' to be correct, move over CSL, you not even in the same league as the E39 M5 Standard clutch for 'Slur'. As for the rear ARB not sure why BMW fitted one, first spirited driving and the brackets will be hanging off. BeastPower and 300 USD fixed that though. Ah yes E39 M5, I remember it well. Regards, The Gorilla. |

Hi,
If you think the E46 has sub frame issues you want to see the amount of e39 rear ones that have cracked, although to be fair to BMW they did make them in Alloy. Word of caution, the S62 has electro magnets in the head that are controlled by the 'G' sensor. When it detects a certain 'G' force the magnets open and allow oil from the far side of the head to drain back to the sump quickly. This is for 2 reasons, the engine is a 45 degree Bank, and on very long left or right handers the oil is unable to drain back via its normal oil way, and the sump can run out of oil. If the G sensor or the electro magnets are not working correctly it brings a whole new meaning to ''Hitting the G Spot''. There is a certain BMW Dealer in the UK who had this twice on their Demo E39 M5 Cars, replacment engines for both. They tried to blame the hairy driver, saying that he had been 'Monkeying around'' with their Demo !! Insult I say, to suggest that a Gorilla is a monkey. Regards, The Gorilla. |

Hi,
AndyK- with the greatest of respect near on 2 ton of Motor Car with 260 kg's of engine sat up front is never going handle that well. Push it really hard, round the twities, get out and look at at your rear ARB, and if its standard, at least one of the rear ARB brackets will be hanging off. That alone tells you a lot about the handling dynamics of the E39 M5. Enjoy it though, 'limp mode' is great for the environment. Regards, The Gorilla. |
