Its not quite as simple as Cantfind1 makes it out. If you obtain any S54 ECU without the keys or EWS to that ECU then you will have to have the ECU reflashed. BMW can supply replacemnet keys around 175.00 each and then you have to sort out your EWS if you want the Car on the 'Key'. Loading on the CSL Files to a non CSL S54 ECU will not be free unless you know somebody and then when its that's all done what do you have and what was the real costs? I would source a ''theif'' kit ie] CSL S54 ECU/EWS/KEYS. Primate being helpful. Regards, The Gorilla. |

I have 2 keys too, is ews a separate unit? If so I guess u need to set it aside, anyone know where it is in the car?

Actually it is quite simple, you can delete the EWS from the ecu and the CSL software can be written onto the chips in the ecu. Plug it into your car and hey presto works with all your original keys, ignition barrel and alarm/immobiliser.
EWS is part of the software. Not a separate unit. I will not go into any further details on this on an open forum....... There are people who can do this, its not too costly. Much cheaper than buying an uncoded new CSL ecu from BMW that's for sure, then finding someone to code it to your car. |

By Passing the EWS is not some big secret. Just one of many examples. http://m3forum.net/m3forum/showthread.php?t=52403 Writing the CSL software on to the S54 ECU can be undertaken but add up all the costs and what you do when it goes wrong or corrupts. That's actually incorrect ... EWS-3.3 (which is the one in the E46 is a separate module).
[It's the white box in the picture below - which is located near the OBD2 port behind the same panel. Both Prime mate and Cantfind1 is sort of right and wrong on this topic ... I don't really want to get into it on here as it'll open up a can of worms on how to steal our car Suffice to say that the 'proper' way of doing things is you'll need to code the DME for the correct EWS and the EWS will need to be authorised for the correct keys, so when it goes through the starting procedure it works as intended (i.e. key, talks via the antenna, talkes to the EWS, verifies that the key is authorised, releases starter relay, sends ISN to DME (which checks the rolling code table to make sure it's the correct EWS) for starting procedure, then the engine comes alive and we all live happily ever after ) .... I know some Guys in Germany who will re-write the S54 ECU to what ever you want. Vanos Optimisation EWS Delete Dash Pod Delete Immobilzer Delete Set in Sport The EWS is a type of Transponder that makes the ''field'' when the key is inserted in the Ignition which also has antena. The ECU sees the signal from the correct key, does not activate the Imob as the signal from the EWS is complete and the engine starts. By defaulting the ECU to start up, the EWS and Imob are in effect by passed. And so on. But the point I was making is costs. Most charge 300/400 plus for Re-Flash then you have to have a ECU which Coding [ Original Poster] does not, so another 200/300 + and where are you ? Most who play around with the S54 ECU are fitting S54 engines into other cars, E30/E36 etc but want to retain the std loom and ECU etc. S54 engine is a cheap power unit but the electrics make it a little off putting to some. Your friend must be fairly smart to be able to crack into the rolling code table and wipe it from the start up procedure ... as far as I know that can only be done on EWS 1, 2 but not 3. NZ_M3 -Yes its been done by them and works well. EWS completely by-passed. They are currently working on a MSS60/65 whereby you do not even require a key, or 'Card' whatever you want to call it. All the EWS etc is again all by-passed. Even on the May 2008 ? onwards versions where by the Diagnostic port is supposedly 'inactive' for ECU access. Forgot to mention they have just done the ECU for Guy who fitted the V10 into an E30 M3 and have made several modifications etc. Clever and some. Regards, The Gorilla.
