Yep...I couldn't understand the 2-11..340r thing. The 340r had luke warm reception when it came out and the 2-11 met with much praise as a drivers car....

I'm not convinced too much thought really went into the 100-90 group, just here are 90 good cars. Only the last 10 got a real fighting chance to place themselves. There are many cars in that 90 that are totally misplaced in most of our opinions.

You are dead right....I've seen this on Lotus/TVR/Piston..all saying the same thing......I will say when you look at the reviews that EVO have done on these cars some of the rankings do not make sense...The CSL is a respectable ranking to be honest....But then I haven't driven all the cars in the list so I really ca not comment on 80% of them...

Well Ade is the person best equipped to comment on the track comparison, of that I have no doubt.

On the road however the CSL is soooo much more useable soooo much more of the time.
EVO's original test of the CSL (when it was still a pre-production prototype and driven by Dickie Meaden) was glowing.

Yet once the CSL went head to head with the MK2 996 GT3 it seemed to come off with a bloodied nose.

Had it been compared with the Mk 1 GT3 it might have been viewed differently.

As it was the MK2 GT3s had vastly improved brakes (350mm and six pots on the front) which drew massive praise, the slightly improved engine was praised for it's top end grunt (and its ability to rev so willingly to the redline) over the Mk1. The handling was praised yet the car was marked down for having less steering feel than that of the MK1 version (especially the initial turn in which was criticised for being vague)

Meanwhile the CSL was IIRC ? described by Phil Bennett in Evo as a "tricked up M3 with some sticky tyres and thus a bit one dimensional"

From my perspective the CSL front end takes a bit to "trust", it rolls on initial turn in, the steering lacks weight and feel (don't confuse them) ! but once you've learnt to trust the front end grip, it becomes a joyous car to drive quickly.

With a car like the Mk1 GT3, you have a simply huge amount of weight, feel and information flowing through the steering wheel (especially on a properly set up car) If you have the confidence you can lean on the GT3s front end very quickly indeed.

The Mk1 GT3 engine and the CSL engine are sooo closely matched that it's almost impossible to call a winner (though clearly the CSLs induction noise is far superior)

The CSL supension is one of the finest compromises for road use that exists. Long travel, compliant and not too harsh over our poorly surfaced roads.

Try an E90/92 on 19" runflats and you'll see just what a fantastic job the guys at Motorsport have done with the CSL (it's no small wonder they're not keen on having runflats on their M Power cars)

For road use the CSL may be a bit less rewarding to extract its performance from, but there's no doubting its speed or usability on roads that would have a GT3s suspension tied up in knots . . . .

It shoukd be waaaay higher up Evos top 100 cars imo
