Top mounts? But then it wouldn't really only be happening under breaking at slow speeds. Just a thought.

Sounds like a worn caliper carrier so when you press the brake it lifts the pad which causes a knock!!
Try this:reverse slow then brake then go forward slow then brake if you hear it knock once when you brake in reverse then knocks going forward its a brake pad or carrier worn!! Copper slip cure that!!
