Default iphone help

Any iphone experts out there on i4s. When playing videos/ music i have no volume pressing the +\- buttons makes no difference and nothing is displayed. The buttons work fine for the ringer and ringer volme. When the headset is plugged in it all works fine. Any help would be apprecaiated as itsno starting to annoy me. thanks
