- I have stable oil temps IMHO (can't push it over 125 ever)
- Headgasket is new

Any ideas what to check?

As Brett says the thermostat could be sticking.

IMO throw the motorsport one in if you are not daily driving it, in v cold weather and never getting up to temp.

Hi,

If your running the 55 deg stat, then in daily driving
once its opened, if in good order it will stay open
unless you have ambeint air temp of 7 deg and less.

The idea of the Sport Stat, is to open and stay open.

When you had the head Gasket replaced did you
re- surface / skim the head ?

S54 is alloy head and should be re-surfaced everytime
the HG is replaced.

Many do not and get away with it, some are not so lucky.

Get and old thermostat, remove the centre but keep
the outer, prevents water caviataion, and fit.

If you have water temp issues with what is
effectively 'no thermostat' then its Water pump,
Rad or more likely head related.

Regards,

The Gorilla.

It was done by an authorized BMW shop under insurance. They had problems finding what was wrong, the motor had a strong ticking noise. After failing to find the source of the noise they removed the head. They then sent it off for finishing since they found a very tiny hairline crack between cyl. 5 and 6. And finally they found a worn down exhaust rocker on cyl 6 - the cause of the ticking of course - so they changed the cam and all rockers. Would I be right in presuming they'd re-surface, being authorized shop probably knowing this is a must do ?

Sounds like something I could take with me and swap to when at the track? Anyone know of any helpful pics on the net so I understand the "remove the centre but keep the outer, prevents water caviataion" better so nothing goes horribly wrong
