Goddam window seal
Picked the car up on Sunday after a very long sojourn at Elms, which included a new gearbox under warranty. Notwithstanding the GTR in the meantime, it felt so good to be back in her. The noise, the lightness and, most of all, the way the brakes perform. How I lived without APs I'll never know.
Decided that CSL is now staying (cannot sell her) so am putting her into storage and doing some man maths to finance it. However... When I picked her up, the whole passenger side door seal was hanging off. Elms will replace it but it's extortionate (over £400). I was thinking of buying some clamps and glueing it myself. Any other (sensible) suggestions? |

Yup, the seal itself is not perished - it's the adhesive that seems to be the issue. It's happened on the driver's side previously and I managed to stick it back on. The other E46 M3 I had suffered exactly the same issue.
It's one of those niggles that can totally ruin my enjoyment of the car. If I see the door seal is a tiny bit adrift in any place, I turn into Patrick Bateman. |

on a related note .. no problems with the warranty even though you had AP's fitted ?
Elms told me th eonly guaranteed way to sort the window frame seal / trims was to fully replace them |

I glued the one on my old E46 and it held OK. The trick is getting the right sort of glue. Lots of advice out there on that, I think I used some sort of Evostick contact adhesive.

Mine had glue marks from a previous owner and I replaced it on the weekend. The trim and seal was £243 from BMW took about 25 mins to replace. They are easily repairable though if they have come away clean and not been glued before. |

Thanks all, and NZ_M3 particularly. Love that this kind of information is available from you guys.
There's a good news/bad news update to this story... The good news is that the car is going back to Elms to get fixed, which means I don't have to live with the door seal hanging off and I don't have to try an amateur fix myself (which I would undoubtedly fuck up). The bad news is that it's going back to Elms, only a week after having been there, because on my way to Cambridge to put the car into storage and after turning the stereo down, I noticed a loud and definite knocking noise from the top end of the engine which quickly became a cacophony under load. I didn't dare drive it further because it sounded pretty terminal. RAC said they would take 90 minutes to send someone, so instead I hitched up my CSL to my wife's Megane RS (she was following me to drop the car off) and we towed CSL to Elms. There's one thing that won't endear you to a BMW sales guy, and that's arriving at their "Platinum" sales event in the middle of the day with a ton of punters on the forecourt and with a Renault towing BMW’s flagship sports car. Anyway, more work for Gareth (thanks mate) and hopefully it's not so serious. |
