Oh yes warranty really is the key word. Mine had 12k worth during my ownership and as a friend of mine works for BMW we have since checked and it has had another 12k's worth since I moved it on.
One has to remember the hype though when they were released. September 2004 if I remember correctly and at that time nothing so advanced was on the market. V10 engine, paddle shift, HUD, moving seat bolsters, miles of cabling and I remember some article were it was said to have more processing power than the space shuttle I replaced the M5 with a V8 M3 which i ran for approx 18 months and never not once did it give any problems, not even a bulb. However, the M3 did not get under my skin the way the M5 did. On the right road in the right conditions it simply was an engineering masterpiece.
