Exactly the same problem for me (the 4th gear)...after lot of work...-new gearbox- and lot of euros; bmw says that the car was so old : 70% in warranty on the gearbox.
My car was 44000km... bad problem for this kilometer....
I am not alone i think it's a gearbox default....

mine was slipping some gear changes 3 to 4 (not going inot gear)

Murketts checked the GBox and found traces of metal in the oil which is hte synchro destroying inself so got aBMw good will new gearbox

got a vid of it soemwhere as i took it to Murketts to prove it as it was very early in the process but had vid from track days

That would make sense. Listening to that vid, the car seems to attempt the change, doesn't get it, tries again (or the gear is attempted again) and eventually it grabs. I expect the gearbox expects the synchro to work in a predetermined time and wouldn't do like a human does and slow a gear change if it's being notchy etc....

I wonder if the change speed was changed to a slower speed if it occurred less?
