I think there is a fair few who echo that statement, I have to say in recent years my desire for a new BMW is fading albeit too rapidly.

If I wanted something practical then yeah one of the latest gen 3 series is great, but in reality the chances of a modern M car on my drive is very slim.

I like the M4 and M2.
Both are extremely heavy for having so many lightweight components.
Also BMW changed their behavior. They are mainstream and are after masses like VW and not true enthusiasts.

The only other car I like which is not BMW level is McLaren.

At the risk of being of being a little controversial, I think we’d all admit that there could also be the smallest part of us that views the CSL through rose tinted specs so there is a little bias there in the first place....however

Aside from the looks, NA engine and low volumes, it does feel like this car was a proper skunkworks project and that BMW allowed the engineers free reign without the bean counters being let in the room (extensive use of Carbon and a lot of engineering that just isn’t seen to the naked eye). All wrapped up in a perfectly proportioned body. Similar to CLK Black, challenge stradale and other cars of the era.

It doesn’t feel like that’s been repeated yet....

Nothing in the modern Bmw M range makes me want to dip my toe.

M4 CS is the best of the bunch but only in Blue or Black.

997 turbo is a nice looking car and would love to drive one at some point..shame it’s not as loud as the CSL but I like everything about it.

When Bmw bring out something that has loads of carbon fibre and looks as good as the CSL I will consider jumping..

The latest gen BMW's are soulless, the M4 is a big heavyweight bruiser, don't get me wrong, they are a very fast car, but they lack the scalpel edge of days of old.

I'd happily have a E46 M3 with some tweaks or a nice CS over and of BMW's latest offerings.

Still don't think you can beat giving it beans in a N/A engined car, especially one with a good engine / exhaust note.

For me, I don't know whats next, i'm happy with my current stable of the CSL + 1 dark side car

Has to be a 991.2 GT3, GT3 RS or a Huracan Perfomante, if monies were no object.

Had a look at the cs m4 in that stunning blue ,at Williams stockport the other day. Think it was £91 k. Looked stunning plenty of carbon etc. If I’d never had the csl probably love the cs . But after owning the csl the pure rawness has gone from most cars now, almost think I’d rather have the lads car now no air con etc, just me and the motor to enjoy the cars now , no driver aids etc me four wheels and an awesome engine, Ok yes it’s a second quicker 0-60, ...But I’m just not desperate to own one, I bought the csl because I just loved the way it looked,then drove the thing and was hooked and still am,, Just not getting that now with any other bmw ...

Now that is a difficult question as I don't think of competing cars, but which ones take my fancy.
In my case I just see cars getting fatter & heavier with loads of gizmos I don't want. For this reason I have stopped looking for many years. When we bought a car for the Mrs a few years back it was greeted with "where is the sat nav, reversing sensors, etc. I didn't know you could buy a cheap down graded Mini".
We both laughed to ourselves as it is a GP2. Yes, they were serious & I think this is another reason some of us on here are not interested in the M4, etc. Long term csl owners are not your average car buyer
I bought a csl at the time over a gt3 because of it being more practical for touring with the Mrs.
Porsche have kept the gt models coming whereas BMW are making over weight living rooms on wheels & living off the M brand. This can be seen with the M badges on nearly every car BMW makes. Not a problem with that, just make a proper M car to go with them.

Cars that I would consider if I was ever to sell cesil are as follows. Even then no doubt I would rule a few out as being too fat for the road.

Schnitzer AC2??? What fun it would be to go through the option list & pick it up in Germany.
