So really a mixed bag of faults that occurs causing 4th failure each has their own reason but best bet get it sorted on warranty then it won't matter because all new parts will be fitted!

Also, what causes the occasional mis-shift? I got three over the 'ring weekend - I "think" they were all 3rd to 4th. Haven't had any since and that makes around 5 or 6 in the 4k miles since I've had the car.

Lawsy is partially correct, so is cantfind1.

The pin seizes but also the actuator wears unevenly causing the shift travel recorded in the adaptation not to match the physical amount of travel leading to more wear.

Most start out with replacing the GPS (gear position sensor) and then re-adaptation, but no one bothers to check the actuator arm which wears in a funny fashion as the root cause.

I am also of the opinion that when you re-adapt the SMG system you shouldn't just do one thing - for eg. just the clutch bit points ect. The whole system works in harmony with each other, so when it's reset you should do the whole lot so the old values don't stay there and you get premature wear from one component travelling that mm further than the rest of the system.

I will update this post with more info as I consolidate them and have time to post up.

If or when you re adapt the clutch bite point, clutch slip point, teach the gear change solenoid.if the pin was seized or the GPS sensors were weak a bmw diagnostic tool will or should pick this up and record it as a fault.i find that my car is smoother and feels better once i re adapt every 6 or so months.
But saying what i have, the tool hasn't picked up a fault with any hydraulic or electrical component which is what leads me to believe its mechanical.my bmw tech and i have gone over these components on mine and found no faults with either!

Re adapting the values will only fail IF you have a fault.if you don't have a fault it should adapt fine!
