I agree that he did alot for the safety of the sport but I don't rate him as a driver. I think back in those days anyone had a crack at it! One minute a mechanic or engineer next F1 driver??? Unlike Senna for example who was always outstanding from an early age and so focused on himself and winning nothing else mattered!

Hi,
I think its impossible to compare Drivers from different era's for all the obvious reasosn so I would go as follows- Equal 1st- Nuvolari - Naturally Gifted in a period when 'Testing' was, start engine, stop. Fangio - Moss was very good, Fangio was better, says it all. Senna- Wet Lap at Donninton ,in that company, ''where others fear to tread'' 4th- Jochan Rindt- Made uncompetitive Cars competive against the likes of Hill / Clark/ Hulme, [Schumacher had contractual Team Orders with his team mates, I expect Hill wished he had to] 5th - Gilles Villenue- The Racer's racer, could drive anything he was given, and always way beyond its limits. Others in the frame, Mansell, very brave racer, but just a shade to much drama about the car, Prost, quick, tactile but alas French, Von Tripps, flamboyant, talented almost to quick, and his vision gave the Schmachers their start, Stewart, almost to canny, very clever driver but the lure of money was to strong to resist, Clarke, could drive anything very, very fast, but just to nice a Gentleman, which sadly contributed to his untimely death. Regards, The Gorilla. |

What generally gets forgotten about Monaco 1984 was that Stefan Bellof was actually closing in on Senna and Prost when the race was cancelled. Now I know the car was subsequently deemed to have been running illegally, but knowing what Bellof was capable in a racing car when on-form I'm not sure too much can be read into that. As fast as anyone on his day As for Prost, not the most exciting of drivers, but if you had to bet your house on someone to bring a car back in one piece then he was your man. 4 titles against serious competition says an awful lot |

Hi,
Quote- ''As for Prost, not the most exciting of drivers, but if you had to bet your house on someone to bring a car back in one piece then he was your man. 4 titles against serious competition says an awful lot'' But 'he' did have the FIA with Balestre Policing and sanctioining everybody else over that period, not forgetting that the FIA at the time was also known as the ''Paris Mafia''. Even poor old Bernie had to mind his 'P's & Q's' in those days. Senna was right on the Money about Balestre and the FIA Estblishment, and everybody knew it, only Senna at the time would speak out. Mansell's first year at Ferrari, they gave him his actual F1 Race Car complete, even with ECU unlocked, very rare, following year, due to much ''Prostation'' Mansell got a British Racing Green Fiat.
