Sold for £255, I went to fookin £250 on auto bid, then the GF rang me FFS !!! missed it by about 2 mins !
It would have been a TD helmet, and if that outer casing was still intact with no obvious sign of damage it would do, as If you take a hit hard enough to get through it, your fooked anyway !! our biggest risk running with no HANS is a head on impact I would think and the combined weight of helmet and bonce .. thats bonce NOT Bounce ! ... being thrown forward at such a rate that ya neck nearly snaps !

Er, I think a few here arent really understanding how a helmet works?
THe outside could be fine and immaculate but if the interior padding or inner shell is damaged it will offer a lot less protection. Age also makes a difference. In the big crash I had last year the driver was wearing an old knackered bike helmet, he was knocked unconcious by his head hitting the side of the Hans seat, ie soft padded bit, such was the limited effect of the padding. His helmet looked fine but the padding was simply compressed through use so his head effectively hit the seat with only the outer shell taking the impact, ie his brain took the full hit. You can pick up a perfectly reasonable new helmet for sub £100, I think you're mad to look at a second hand one for twice that? |

I agree with John, I will only ever wear a new helmet, and only Arai at that too because to my knowledge they are the only company that offers a free custom fitting service, and fit is the most important thing IMO.
Cautionary tale...when I raced bikes I was wearing a brand new RX7 and I had what I thought was a mild off at Druids. I never even felt my head hit the ground but there was a small abrasion on the lid. The marshalls to my fury removed the ACU gold sticker rendering the helmet useless for racing...£550 down the drain!! Anyways I found that the helmet could be refinished by Arai at Stoke, so I took it there, after two weeks they showed me the xray they took of the helmet showing the tiny cracks spreading out over half the shell under the paint (thats the way the impact is deflected apparently). |

Stand21 do made to measure, lots of money though, but certainly a made to measure is another planet compared to off the shelf. Completely over the top for occasional track day use of course.

I wouldnt expect someone who races to go and buy a helmet off ebay ...... a helmet is a small wedge in terms of a racing season(£££) but is the first line of defense in an accident. you could go on forever, buy the best helmet, no race suit, crash, go up in flames and burn to death, fuck I should have bought that second hand helmet and spent what I saved on a suit... but then you wouldnt wear a suit on a track day because you'd look like a twat... |
