The problem with these cars is, if you do not drive them, when you do they break, then when you do drive them they break.

Only issue is with warranty, anything on the engine and your be waiting a year easy.

Probably best to get a order in for some camshafts, keep them safe and go to a indy for anything else and save yourself the agro of dealing with BMW.

No, my car has been off the road since July last year waiting for them. BMW rejected three batches of cams and now can't give me a date when the next batch is going to be available (which "may" mean they have given up on the original supplier and are seeking an alternative). Up until October last year, I was given dates of when each batch was going to be in, but after each date came and went, I was advised that they had been rejected and the next batch was going to be arriving on x date. However, after the third rejection, they were suddenly unable to provide dates as BMW GmBh were no longer giving the UK that information. So I am currently in limbo, not knowing when my car will be ready.

Got offered a 1 series courtesy car, but told they what I used the CSL for (weekend toy), so wanted something equivalent fun to drive (as in an M-car of some description), but was told this was not possible.

I had thought this situation had been resolved, it is very poor on BMW's part regarding communication. I can (sort of) understand the restriction in supply but when things just go quiet...

Presumably you could fit either standard M3 cams or aftermarket ones but then BMW wouldn't honour the warranty?

I think if this happens to me I'll be cancelling my warranty and going independent.

If I had done this myself with BMW it would have cost £7k, even at BMW's subsidised rates they give to the warranty scheme, it is still costing them £5.5k, so other than the length of time it is taking, I'm quite relieved it is being done under the warranty scheme. They have offered to financially compensate me for the loss of use, but can only give a figure once it has all been done and dusted.

when you say it would have cost £7K .. what do you reckon realistically it would have cost with a good specialist and aftermarket cams ? Anything else need replacing at teh same time ?

I run a warrenty but do wonder what the 'real' cost of these repairs might be and wether we are just being frightened into keeping the warrenty going ( my BMW dealer keeps talking about smg pumps and the potential cost if they go )

Agreed

7K seems outlandish but not surprising given the average daily dealership costs are £25K.

If you just changed the cams and followers, you'd probably get away with a bill under £4K. The problem is, aftermarket cams don't seem to be freely available either, because only Schrick make anything for the CSL at the moment and we're fairly sure Schrick make the OEM ones, aren't we?

The second issue is that you have to take the engine almost entirely apart to do the job, so there's a lot of very tempting "might as wells" to do at the same time. If you're changing the followers why not the springs and if you're changing the springs why not the valve and you'd better change or refurbish the oil pump and perhaps a new head gasket...

So it's probably going to be more than £4K, if you can get hold of standard lift aftermarket cams AND, here's the major taboo, you're happy to own and sell on a CSL with non-standard engine parts. Perhaps I'm overthinking it.
