If you're going on track with it, forget the Cup 2s, go for the Cup 1s or the Pirelli Trofeo Rs (which are available in CSL sizes) and although more expensive than the Cup 1s, are supposed to be even more track focused.

The Cup 2s would do as a reasonable all rounder, offering better dry grip than the MPSS's, at the expense of not as good wet weather grip (but are supposed to be miles better than the Cup 1s in these kind of conditions (but nowhere near as good track grip - see the reviews of trackday peeps on here).

I run two sets of CSL wheels (I picked up a set for £1k) and have Cup 1s on the black wheels (which hide brake dust) and the MPSS on the silver road wheels.

I would personally buy another set of wheels. Every time you swap tyres you risk the fitters damaging a tyre, so by the time you factor in one damaged tyre and the cost to change every time you may as well buy another set. I would keep an eye out for a good used set though.

Also, I wouldn't be happy putting 4 tyres in my car, never mind 4 used, to drive to the tyre fitters. The soft touch black stuff really is easy to scuff or am i just being anal?

Miles better than original cups in the wet? The jury is out on that. I will be treating them the same. Nearly filled my pants when hitting some standing water that I thought would not bother the originals. Virtually brand new as well. Hate to think what they will be like after a few miles

Thanks for the replies.

Although I've said the car will go onto a track, it won't be living on there.

I spend so much time away for work that me being available for track days isn't going to happen too often.

I fancied trying the cups after having AD08s on my GP, with the suspension set up I had it totally transformed the car. As said, it won't make much of an appearance in the winter so the chances are the cups will stay on.

If I needed a second set of wheels for the SS, they would only be on the car for as short a time as possible, hence reps if needed.

The AD08s used to stay on the GP all year round, I just had to accept they weren't going to be as good when either cold or wet. The GP didn't hang about as Peter will testify

I also appreciate cesil has 100 more bhp but to me, if the conditions are crappy, I'll just have to remember to pussyfoot!!

get a set of new rims, makes things so much easier

maybe loose £300 when sold but otherwise an asset and saves you on tyre swaps and all that entails and risks

Stick the cups on, put the SS's in the garage and be done with it. I drove my old E92 M3 through winter with cups on and like you said you just need to respect it. If you feel you need to put the SS's back on then worry about it then.

I'll keep it brief for you

It will now see a track when time allows, I work what's classed as part time nowadays although still currently away for a minimum of 6 months pa.

I want to try cups.

2nd set was what seemed a sensible idea but if I'm going to chuck another 1600 quid at the car, I'll spend it on something that ain't going to be collecting cobwebs in the garage.

Cups will now stay on all year. IF plans change and I need to use it in the winter then as Scott said, worry about another set of wheels then.

My car doesn't see enough use now for two sets, I sold my winter wheels as they were collecting cobwebs.
I leave full fat Cups on all the time now and just avoid driving at all in winter or if I do, make sure I don't boot it off of roundabouts (that ends badly...).
