Tip, top tips of places to go S. France/N. Italy - by car ?
As titled. I am just looking for recommendations of places to stay and visit with my wife as we drive across southern France and northern Italy along with Austria and Switzerland et al. I am hoping to do a couple of the 'must do' drives but the wife has already said she does not want to be driving the whole time. We have nine days or so before we need to be in Calais.
Any tip, top, tips appreciated. Pip |

A few hotels that may be on your route
Hotel Bellevue (Gran Paradiso) Hotel La Perla, Hotel Rosa Alpina (Dolomites) Spa Hotel Jagdhof (Neustift) Can also recommend a few in France if you want to break up the journey. Taking the car with a boot? |

I did this a couple of years ago - and would highly recommend it.
Must do locations / roads South of France: Stay in Vence - about 30km North of Nice, much less commercialised, but with some fantastic restaurants. From Vence - must do drives include Gorges du Verdon and Col du Torini both of these are less than an hour from Vence. From South East France - head for the Italian Lakes, Como and Garda, and from Lake Garda it's fairly easy to get to Bormio which is the start of the Stelvio pass. Personally I think the Stelvio is a little over rated as the hairpin bends are too tight and steep. From the Stelvio, the Swiss border is only a few km away. Must do roads in Swtizerland inlcude the San Bernardino pass, plus the Furka, Grimsel and Susten passes, these three passes form a triangle - a much bigger version of the EVO triangle. Possibly the best roads of my trip. If you base yourself in Andermatt or Interlaken these passes will be on your door step. Happy to let you have hotel details via PM Enjoy your trip! |
