Oh yes warranty really is the key word. Mine had 12k worth during my ownership and as a friend of mine works for BMW we have since checked and it has had another 12k's worth since I moved it on.
One has to remember the hype though when they were released. September 2004 if I remember correctly and at that time nothing so advanced was on the market. V10 engine, paddle shift, HUD, moving seat bolsters, miles of cabling and I remember some article were it was said to have more processing power than the space shuttle

I replaced the M5 with a V8 M3 which i ran for approx 18 months and never not once did it give any problems, not even a bulb.
However, the M3 did not get under my skin the way the M5 did. On the right road in the right conditions it simply was an engineering masterpiece.

From 1:05 on no video on the internet has ever made the hairs stand on the back of my neck like this does........

Seems like an excellent choice for England that you can have BMW warranty.

Everywhere else... the idiot has to pay for everything

I ran one for about two years as a daily, fabulous car but Jesus H it was almost a daily trip to the petrol station.
One of the best cars I've ever had.

I had a new 535D before the M5, great everyday car ! Very hard to find a nice one now though and they give their fair share of problems.
Interestingly the M5 is actually more comfortable on the softest EDC setting, the 535 can be a little crashy.

So I've driven 2 E60 M5's and today a mate convinced me to take a 335d for a test drive at a dealer. I'm a little disturbed at how compelling the 335d is as a daily! I really wanted to hate it but it's actually pretty good as a no drama mode of transport at a fair pace.

Yes it has a diesel chatter and the slush box is boring but to carry bikes/dog/skis etc it seems ideal plus the Mrs might allow me to buy "her" (read "me") an elise as I'm putting up with a diesel on a daily basis.

The M5 is very impressive but it only really came alive well into illegal speeds and the running costs are utterly frightening. I also much like the look of the E91 compared to the E60.
