My engine go rattle
So after a short run at on Saturday start the car this morning and it just rattles immediately. Related to engine revs does it from idle. Open bonnet rattle seems top end near the front. Drives fine though, power OK no misfire or anything.
So Vanos? Time to flex the warranty. Last edited by Pooky; 14-05-2012 at 07:00 PM. |

Hi,
From what you describe it sounds like it could be a Vanos issue. Regards, The Gorilla. |

Been out with the dealer technician, agree it's got a problem. The shout of cam follower seems sensible as it has that tappety quality of a badly adjusted old A-Series Mini, and seems to be coming from the middle of the cam cover.

Had a similar problem on a previous M3. Thought the worst but it turned out to be a faulty connection on a sensor, located using the diagnostic system.

So one of the cam followers on the intake has worn to a 3 ridge shape, rather than smooth curve, which is all rather strange. And technician said that all the valve clearences needed doing, and some by quite a margin. Strange again suggesting maybe clearences not done despite full dealer history...

3 cam followers being replaced under warranty.
Impossible to prove but looking at the wear patterns it looks like incorrect clearances to me (I've been to look at the car with the technicians) especially as the cam is untouched for wear or grooving, measures the same etc., Also, the cam followers are not grouped together and the amount of wear on each differs, one is very bad. Doesn't seem to be any reason why it might have had oil starvation at the top of the engine plus the wear is very polished suggesting it's been happening over a period. Basically they are all carrying three flats on the follower rather than a smooth curve. All the other followers are fine. |
