CSL wanted... yes another one!

Hi everyone,

I recently parted with my Exige S and have decided the next car on the list should be a CSL. I did quite a few track days in my Exige but i also used it for touring (did France and Italy last year) and used it as a daily driver as long as it wasn't snowing. They are fantastic cars but are really in their element out on track and with more touring and daily driving on the horizon i'm hoping the CSL will prove to be a capable car on track but slightly more refined off it!

In terms of spec I'm after a SG CSL (although i'm not too fussed about colour) with Xenons and A/C. Ideally it would have FBMWSH and I want to warranty the car with BMW so either the car needs to be already on the warranty scheme or I at least need the option of putting a warranty on it. Mileage i'm looking at sub 60k and my budget is around 25k.

Welcome to the forum

Now a sub 60k mile CSL with that extras and full history for £25k might be a struggle. Especially with the current surge in interest on them.

welcome and good luck with your search. seems like there is a big que for csl's in your criteria. been watching the market as keep thinking of selling mine but as we all know, selling in the next few years is not the sensible thing to do. got my eye on a few cars, and csl's are the only performance cars shifting. most good ones are gone within a week.

personally i think you need to up your budget for the criteria you mention (not just saying this as a current owner) and be quick when one comes up for sale

Good luck with the search, I had an Exige S as well! The CSL is much better on the road and I can have my family with me to enjoy the noise.

It didn't take long for the first SG vs SB insult!!

Thanks for the advice, in truth I don't mind increasing my budget if the 'right' car comes along, although with few cars available at any time finding the 'right' car might be easier said than done. On the plus side, most CSL's i've seen that have been up for sale are well looked after examples and I get the impression owners in general take good care of these cars which is encouraging.

A few questions:

What's it like living with the SMG? I've read mixed reviews about it, but especially for those who use theirs regularly or as a daily driver is it any good when you're not trying to go fast?

Secondly is there anything in particular you should be looking out for when inspecting a CSL?

Also just out of interest, for those of you who have owned yours for a few years what have the market prices been doing? Did they bottom out a while ago and are on the way back up or have they remained pretty flat?

Pointless question as everyone is slightly different. Drive it is my advice.
My view is its fine in all arenas.

Secondly is there anything in particular you should be looking out for when inspecting a CSL?

Lots to look out for, Im sure there is a buyiing guide on here.

Few small things to check.

General condition.
Check carbon on roof and splitters.
Service history, very important.
Boot floor cracks.
Try to trace owners and past of the car.

Oh and take someone who knows cars along with you to check it out before you buy it.

On the way up as far as I can tell, and only going further if the germany trip gets good publicity- that Shimmy is a very clever guy

I'll have them up to minimum £30k by 2015 and rising!

You just waiting until the Americans can buy them for their roads!

More seriously they bottomed out in 2008 according to the data. Steady since then to 2013 then now I think a slight upward slope especially for lower mileage ones

Hello and Welcome to the Register 'A-Mart'

Firstly it's usually the other way Round.

Recent trends in adds and sales would suggest a 40/50K miler will set you back c.£28K. Take care of them and they take care of you, and you reep the benefits when you sell.

SMG is livable for everyday use, you can always stick it auto if your in congestion, hit the open road and you'll love it.

Big thing with me is Service History has got to be spot on to tick the boxes, 15000mls. or 2 yearly between each service following the running in inspection.
Also preferred to come with the Extended Warranty. Taking out a new warranty can be expensive, better if you can take over an existing one.

Prices have been steadily rising since last September, however since Christmas there has been a more recent increase as they approach 10years old.

imo SMG is fantastic, super smooth & auto has a direct link into your brain. Ok it is not as fast as twin clutch but that's the only thing imo. If this is not the case for someone they should be asking questions of themselves not the gearbox.

I'd like an interim oil change rather than just the 2yr/15k mile fuel countdown. Mechanically sound well maintained car is far more important than whether you can see stone dinks on the bumper. Warranty is peace of the mind.
