General Road Tyres...

What other tyres are people running apart from Cups? How do you rate them for road driving, and have you tried them on track? Finding the Hankook RS2's a little bit hopeless for winter user and thinking of maybe PS2's or someone even mentioned Falkens?

Going for 225/45/17 front and 245/40/17 rear fitment.

I use PS2 on the CSL as road tyres as they are also suitable for a bit of track action when the weather is too pants for Cups.

My E36 328 Sport currently has Continental Sport Contact 3 tyres which seem pretty good - on road at least...

Vredestein Wintrac xtreme
255/35 R 19 96 W XL for the rear
235/35 R 19 91 W XL for the front


These are the only winter tyre that has a speed rate of 160mph


Basically, winter tyres work better then summer tyres when the temperature drops below 7 degrees
from November to March the average daily temp is below 7 degrees and wet in England


I think they will outperform PS2 in winter months I will use the cups from April to October as I always have done.



The odd track day in Winter I'll stick the cups back on.

I presume that on trackday's in Winter the Cups still reach a suitable operating temperature?

I use PS2's by the way craig but am yet to try them on track, wet dry or otherwise!

You might be surprised at just how competent these tyres can be on track Dan - they really aren't that far of Cup tyre performance when pushed hard IMHO

You just need to go out for longer session, as they take a little longer to come up to temperature.

Well hopefully I'll find out at the Ring and Spa, still not sure what to put my cups on!

That's a great, proper Winter tyre and as U say, the only one that has the 160 MPH speed rating as most Winter tyres are limited to 130 MPH. My daily E39 Touring has Winter boots on right now (Dunlop SP Winter Sport) and it makes a huge difference on the road at least, when it's this cold. They go on mid November and off at the end of March.

I run those too, albeit 265/30 on the rear. I'm not impressed by their performance in the cold / damp, but they come into their own on snow! On the PS2 I couldn't get anywhere but on these it's fine

On these cold greasey road mornings though I find the levels of grip astonishingly low - lower than the PS2 possibly. It doesn't take much provocation to get the rear wheels spinning widely in 3rd or 4th gear below 60mph.
