Warning light.... SMG?
Hadn't used the car for a few weeks (since a track day @ Croft), got the car out the garage this morning........
And had a yellow round cog with an '!' in the middle stay on. This is the last symbol on the right hand side of the dash. Car drove and felt fine. Got it to work, turned it off, started again and the warning light has gone. Is this the dreaded "SMG" light? Can I assume it was just upset at not being used for while as it has now gone out?

Mine did this a couple of weeks ago and was a struggle to start.
I finally got it going and it drove fine (albeit with the light still illuminated on the dash) I got the car home and switched it off whilst reading the owners manual to establish what the problem was. The manual basically said take the vehicle to your nearest authorised BMW dealer as there is a fault with the SMG transmission. I restarted the car several minutes later and the light extinguished. Two days later I went to the car and it refused to start altogether. I spoke to a BMW technician who said call out BMW assistance and get them to get the car started if they could and then read the fault codes (BUT do NOT clear them) then get them to recover the car to the dealership. I left it and returned to it the following day thinking it wouldn't start, it did, with the first turn of the key !! I drove it down to the dealership (with the SMG light still illuminated) and showed them the problem. I left the car with them and got a phonecall later that same day to say the problem lay with a relay that had failed. They replaced it (£8.00) but the diagnosis time and replacement of two injectors (which had shown up on the fault codes when interrogated) came to a total of £600 !! (thank goodness for the BMW warranty) It's all fine again now |

I had it a couple of days ago. I had a flat battery and charged it all night and it came on when starting her up in the morning. I turned her off and restarted and it went. I wouldn't worry too much. Its renowned to come up after a hard workout.

I had it couple of years ago. Parked up after very easy 40 mile drive then started up again after ten mins and the light came on. Left car stood for hour or so and it went out, not seen it since.
