M3 Engine problem

These are the emails i got after my problem with my CSL

Hey, not sure if you're the original owner of your CSL or not, but I think you can probably help me out. I suspect that my VANOS may have **** the bed (possibly including a broken timing chain and kissed pistons). I have an '06 with 48,199 mi on it, and am the second owner. Do you get any sort of extended warranty, or is BMW just doing the right thing. My service department is closed until MOnday 8 am and they were closed when I dropped the car off. It would be awesome if I had some info... forewarned is forearmed after all.

Mark, thanks for the info.

With only 48k on my car, I've had the running in inspection, Inspection I, and two oil changes. I did the last oil change myself (~9k miles ago) and have the receipt from Opie Oils for all of the materials. I can understand them not wanting to replace bad ignition coils, and alternator, water pump, or something like that, but a catastrophic engine failure at 48k miles, warranty or not, really isn't worth the bad press. Enjoy the CSL Cup race. I wish I could make it up, but no such luck this weekend.

I had a 'Ring trip scheduled in August. I guess we'll have to wait and see about that one.

The estimate came to 7000 pounds. Fortunately I was low enough speed, and caught the deceleration right away so I got on the clutch and didn't have the momentum of the car driving the pistons into the valves.

The sprocket connecting the exhaust cam shaft to the timing chain sheared its bolts, bending exhaust valves on 4 of the 6 cylinders. Luckily, no damage to the head or pistons due to the low speed and immediate clutch disengagement. New valves, timing chain, sprockets, idler, guides, etc. BMW GB is goodwilling all of the parts and half of the labor, so my part of the bill is going to be 1500-2000 pounds. Since I'm 13 months and ~20,000 miles out of warranty, I'll take that as a good result.

I didn't even have to mention goodwill repairs. The dealer put in the request as soon as they put together the estimate.
