New M3/M4 not getting overly rapturous reviews. Of course quicker than ever, but conclusion seems to be that turbocharging has killed the fun and not even M Div can design round a dull engine to start with.

Mmm...not sure a loud exhaust will help when you cruise round corners at mid revs/full torque that apparently you end up doing.

Unless the noise lures you more into the upper revs. Sounds like a compulsory mod if that is the case.

Sutcliffe, what an idiot.
The SMG is rubbish... but bmw sold the CSL as a manual in the states.

It's a bit odd really because the twin turbo 6cyl in the 1M got quite good reviews... you'd think adding nearly 100bhp would only help matters!

I wonder if BMW are having to faff around more and more with augmented sound rather than genuine engine sound while trying to keep up with emissions regs. Sound is wasted energy after all, and cars are expected to be more refined with each revision. It's probably an easy aftermarket fix though as you say. Tricky to get much in the way of induction noise now though.

Also hi , I'm in the process of trying to make sure I've got a reason to stick around on this forum, but will do a proper introduction when I know what's happening (decision Tuesday!)

Excellent. Get it bought !
Just keep thinking hard-edged induction noise at 8000 revs and the notes will leave your wallet.
I still remember trying to hide my smile when I test-drove mine and muster a 'yeah, guess it's ok' response to kick off negotiations. Yeah right....

I love the look of the M3 and on paper the stats read well but it is the whole turbocharging issue and loss of the classic 'M' factor that taints it a little for me unfortunately...

Saying that, I wasn't a huge fan of the E9x M3 but have grown to like it over time.
