Noisy Box/diff??? Only at slow speeds?
Hi there,
This may be the norm, i dont know as i have had no experience of the BMW SMG boxes before. Basically, having driven home from work, she gets a bit of a thrapping on the open roads, i pull into the cul de sac where i live, having changed into 2nd, then i slow right down to crawling pace to ease up the small stepped drive entrance, ( please note , i have not selected nor has it auto selected1st gear, as i have not come to a complete standstill) whilst doing this, and creeping up the drive entrance there are various dull clunky / thuddy (new word ) noises. Not metallic clunks, just damped clunkings. Only seems to do it after a proper blat, then coming to crawling pace speeds, as in parking up etc. Is this noise just the gearbox sorting itself out and nothing to worry about , or ....are the boxes generally silent in function unless there is a problem ??? Having seen so many adds for cars when looking for mine , stating they have had new clutches and rear diffs at only 20 odd thousand miles, just made me wonder if these are fairly "Normal " replacements and time periods for things like diffs???Which sounds a bit toss to me, clutches maybe but diffs i would have expected much longer service from. Many thanks for any replys. Cheers, Nick |

Well i think i am right in saying that all the CSL's do this?? Either that or mines fooked as well
I asked the same question on other forums when i had the car a few days, its a weird sensation and one you learn to deal with, is it the same(ish) noise when changing up the gears 1>2 2>3???

I guess its more obvious when all the transmission fluids are hot/thinner?? than when cold, as i dont generally do short journeys in mine, so once i have set off from cold in her i just carry on straight to work on fast open A roads, whereas on the way back, pulling up at home everything is up to temp so to speak. Thanks for the reply. |

Its normal on the CSL mate! Mine does the clunk/bump noise when going up the box or down at a very low speed!
Sure all is fine! No need to bother like the Evo, BMW are round the corner with cover! |

Thought it may be the norm but wasnt sure. Just been looking at the Oulton drift day thread on the MLR, sounds interesting, did the Sprint on that track in my VI, ludicrously slippy but if its just a mess about then it may be a good crack, you defo going si ? |

Hopefully it will not be as messy as last year, its basically a track they use with Rear drive escorts and the like as a training course for rally lads etc, so they arent particularly bothered about panel damage , and have a bit more than 4" clearance under the car. Could be great fun or could be bumper/splitter crackingly good. Though i would really like to get an idea of how she behaves with the DSC off and how best to correct/reign in a slide that is bigger than i may want If its so close to you, get your lazy ass over there and check it out Recon is required Corporal , Crack on |

I was there a few weeks ago and to be honest it looked
10 times better than the MLR sprint day! With rear wheel drive cars the speed is cut by about 50%! Need alot of speed in a 4 wheel drive! Will be fine in the CSL! i drive my CSL with DSC off and have done since the day i got it! Now get ya name down! |
