Oil temps on track
What temps are you guys reaching on track? I was getting 125 degrees today, which seems alot. My Mazda 3 MPS used to go to 110 and that was it. Should I be considering an oil cooler?

Hi,
125 Degrees Oil temp on a S54 is very high. Many run it on Track in both CSL and M3 but in my opinion is to high. Why ? Std S54 takes the oil temp from the Oil Filtre block as the oil is flowing back into engine block / head, from the oil filtre / cooler etc. So the temp reading is taken from the oil when in flow at one of its coolest locations. To have 125 deg Oil temp at that location will mean that the oil temp around number 6 cylinder will be 140/150 deg, plus. At 150 deg even 10-60 syth oil will be suffering from Oil degredation due to ''oil shear''. Syth Oil will also start to foam at these sorts of temps which can cause hot spots etc. Some may disagree, but persoanlly I would not be runninmg a std S54 at 125 deg oil temp, if I was planning on keeping the engine any length of time. Race car, different story. Regards, The Gorilla. |

more cooling is the only real way to reduce general temps surely, unless you have a fault and it can be rectified
