Inspection 2- Main dealer or specialist??!!

Guys,

Interested to know how much impact on resale you think there is in using a specialist for the service as opposed to the main dealer. Just been quoted £1200 from main dealer for inspection 2, from a specialist £450.

What do you all reckon?

Guess it all depends on which specialist, if they are well known then it shouldnt matter too much.

Insp 2 is the valve tappet clearance check, amongst other things (I think?) The clearances are checked and then re-shimmed if required. It is a real pain of a job to do properly - the engine has to be cold, and I mean overnight parked up on the ramp cold. If it is driven from the car park to the ramp in less than 30 seconds, it will be too hot to check the clearances. I did hear a horror story where some idiot (at the dealers) who didn't know what they were doing managed to balls up the clearances - the car was fine when it left the workshop, but the owner noticed a mis-fire develop the next day, it got worse and worse until it popped the head gasket and burnt out a valve seat. Needed a new engine - which took a lot of convincing, but luckily the guy who owned it is an engineer so they couldn't pull the wool over his eyes. Imagine if an owner had no idea how an engine worked, they'd be screwed......Dealer response:" The car was test driven after the service and was fine when you collected the car sir, this new fault has developed since"

In summary, do your homework - ask to speak to the actual mechanic who is physically going to do the service and ask him very nicely that he takes extra special care of your pride and joy, it is not a 118d! If you don't feel confident that they can do it correctly - spend your money elsewhere.

I called in at a "Well known independant CSL specialist" for a dyno run and fuelling set up on my Golf race car. Got chatting with one of the mechanics who was fitting a new vanos unit to a CSL, when I asked him- "So how do these Vanos units work, and what is the potential problem with them?" He replied, "Haven't got the faintest idea, I only started here last week and I've never done one before - but I'm sure I'll work it out" I've never been back since.

The valve clearances are done in both the Inspection services, it's the spark plugs (and a filter or two) that are extra in the Insp 2.

Possibly, it's in the service handbook if anyone wants to check.

As said, depends on:

1. Which specialist ?
2. Do you have a warranty (if you do, am sure it has to be dealer....)

I got that quote from ncb autokraft who are a Midlands based company who alot of the guys on M car forum have recommended. Its a difficult decision because its a substantial difference, but it looks like for £600 odd, id be better off just going main dealer. I do have a warranty as well with BMW so I guess maybe I have to!
