AP rear pads/discs choices - ?

Following someone's post regarding the pins seizing in their caliper I checked my pins. Actually, as she has been holed up in the garage for the last few months I decided to put the rears into Lepsons for a refurbish - £100 a pop each!!. Anyway the pins were fine with a little corrosion around the calpier's recess of the 6mm hex bolt in the form of white powedery residue.

Whilst doing that I checked the rear discs ~ 19mm and the pads 10mm. So is there any cause for concern are they within tolerance, should I replace either or both of them and what are the choices - ? I am still running DS 2500s in the front when not on track but am not sure what the rears are... presumably the same. I do not really want RS29s on the rear regardless of any equilibrium or not.

Incidentally I bought a spare set of RS29s for the Porsche's 350mm discs and only looked at my card statement last week £445.29 . I kind of assumed they would be comparable to those for a CSL with APs.

Anyway pictures below. Apologies for lack of clarity. The first picture shows the material side and the second the backs. Both covered in rust from the discs.

Ps Can someone confirm that the wheel nuts should be torque at 120nm.

Just make sure you do them up to 88lbs/ft.....






I'm not sure about the rest, but my pads work until I hit metal!!

I was wondering when you would be along with your scraping tip top tip Shimmy . So any idea on the minimum thickness for the rear discs and what other options there were aside from OEM with an AP set up - PF?.

I have not looked into prices for the OEM one or spoken to BMW as I am abroad now anyway.

Oem minimum rear disc thickness is 18.4 mm Pip.I only know this because I renewed my discs and pads yesterday and the minimum thickness is etched on them

I don't have AP's on my M3 but I imagine the corrosion is galvanic reaction caused by dissimilar metals with the caliper being aluminium and the pins being steel??

I use this stuff on my Elise (and anything else that has 2 dissimalar metal touching each other) anywhere I have anything bolting to the aluminium chassis. http://www.eliseparts.com/products/show/60/408/duralac/ it seems to have stopped my chassis from going all white and powdery and its cheap. Lasts ages to...I'm still on my first tin.

Gareth will know. Personally I would run Rear OEM discs with RS29 as Im sure the AP rear discs do not have any advantage over OEM just look nicer.

Also looking into a set of APs. Does anybody know the min thickness for front OEM discs? New is 28mm. There is a bloke on PH selling set of AP front calipers , with OEM discs skimmed to 25mm. Wondering if there is really much life left in these???

if buying a completly new AP kit, and planning on running RS29s for track, (maybe keeping the DS2500 for road) are the front discs that come in the AP BBK considered any good, or do I need to expect to shell out for PF discs a short time later?

3mm taken from a 28mm disc sounds too much IMO



AP discs are fine in the proper kit, you should get a few sets of pads out of them
